An ICU (intensive care unit) is a hospital ward that provides specialized care for patients who are very ill or injured. ICUs are also known as critical care units (CCUs) or intensive therapy units (ITUs).

What happens in an ICU?

  • Patients receive 24-hour care from specially trained healthcare professionals
  • Patients are monitored using sophisticated equipment, such as machines that check vital signs
  • Patients receive specialized treatments, such as oxygen therapy, feeding tubes, and intravenous (IV) fluids

Who needs to go to an ICU?

  • Patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries, such as heart attacks, kidney failure, or severe burns
  • Patients recovering from major surgery
  • Critically ill children with trauma, respiratory distress, or severe infections

How do you get admitted to an ICU?

  • You usually need a referral from a doctor or specialist, unless you are an emergency admission

What happens after leaving the ICU?

  • You may be transferred to another ward in the hospital, which could take a few days to a few months
  • You may experience side effects, such as weakness, fatigue, or trouble sleeping
